As Doulas, we like to start relationships months in advance of delivery day, helping Moms prepare for their ideal birth experience and birth plan. Our Doulas are happy to practice in all birth settings including homes, birth centers, and hospitals. We serve as emotional and physical support for the laboring person, their partner and their family. Doulas can also act as an informal liaison, providing educational resources between a midwife or doctor and the family members in the event critical decisions must be made. A good doula's job is to be completely non-bias in the birthing choices of the mother and the family. With this, it is also a doula's role to provide evidence-based resources for the mother as requested so that she can make her own educated decisions. You should never feel pressured or demoralized by your doula or anyone because of your birthing choices.
ATOM doula does not and shall not discriminate based on race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, etc. Although we work with and advocate for all people we have a particularly soft spot for moms of color. Black women in the United States experience unacceptably poor maternal health outcomes, including disproportionately high rates of death related to pregnancy or childbirth. Both societal and health system factors contribute to high rates of poor health outcomes and maternal mortality for black women, who are more likely to experience barriers to obtaining quality care and often face racial bias. Black women are three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women discrimination throughout their lives. For so long people of color believed that doula care was a privilege reserved for wealthy, white people capable of paying for the resource. Doulas have been part of pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery for women of all backgrounds, but specifically women of color, for centuries. It is easy for their grass-roots efforts to get lost in the tragic statistics and stories, but doulas are doing community-based work in cities to give babies and mothers a better chance of survival.
